Twin brother and sister Aumkar Dave and Laxmi Dave from Stratford School Academy made their way to Newham Community Project to deliver a large haul of donations collected by the students at Stratford School Academy.

Around £400 worth of toiletries including toothpaste, soap, shower gels, shampoos, deodorants, perfume, and hand sanitizers were collected from students across our two school sites, which were then hand delivered to the project.

Newham Community Project is a local charity which aims to support international students and provide aid for the Newham community with essential provisions and support services.

The students were moved to action when their Heads of House delivered a school wide assembly about the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17th October). The assembly acknowledged the negative impact that the Covid-19 pandemic had on overcoming global poverty.

The short term economic and wellbeing costs of COVID-19 have been severe. Though many hoped that the pandemic would be a temporary shock, in the interim it has pushed many vulnerable households living at the margins back into poverty. Due to lockdowns and social distancing measures, many lost jobs, and livelihoods, leaving them unable to pay for housing, toiletries, and food.

In Newham alone, 50% of children are now living in poverty – a truly sobering percentage which prompted Newham’s students to ask, ‘What can we do to help?’. The best way the students knew how was to begin collecting as many unused toiletries as they could to be re-distributed to homes within the borough.

Our students now urge the wider community to follow their lead and donate as many food items and unused toiletries as they can over the Christmas period.
