PSHE

Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop our students as responsible citizens who can make positive and meaningful contributions to their local communities and the wider world. We provide opportunities for students to understand elements of the modern world that they will need to make decisions about, offering valuable information so informed and safe decisions can be made.

KS3

At Key Stage 3 students are given opportunities to think critically about key issues that affect young people; enabling them to take part in important discussions, where different opinions are considered and questions are encouraged, to address misconceptions. Students reflect on their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, that informs their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for diversity. We teach students to respect and appreciate all forms of diversity within school and further afield, as an essential element of their preparation for life in the modern world.

In PSHE lessons we explore key themes including Staying Safe, Personal Identity, Civil Rights and Healthy Relationships. A lesson will always focus one of our central themes and include students revisiting key areas throughout KS3, asking questions, and debating key elements of the area of study in a safe space.

We have designed our PSHE curriculum to be specific to the needs, interests, and experiences of our students. We promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students so that they are prepared for life beyond secondary school. Students are taught to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives. To recognise legal boundaries and, in doing so, respect the law of England. Students understand the consequences of their behaviour and actions and develop an interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

Learning in PSHE is supported by the pastoral system, other curriculum areas and other aspects of our school. Daily registration sessions and weekly assemblies continue the conversation around current local and global issues.

We encourage our students to develop their learning beyond the classroom by participating in extra-curricular clubs, such as debating. The PSHE curriculum offers experiences that go beyond the classroom, with trips and visits by external agencies that help students to think critically about the wider world and the contributions that they will making. This is organised throughout the year to continue the conversations our curriculum provokes.

We want our students to leave SSA with a greater understanding of the world they live in and how they can use their voices to make a difference.
