Students Explore the Future of Work During Green Careers Week

From 3rd to 7th November, students in Years 7–10 took part in a wide-ranging programme of activities to mark Green Careers Week, an initiative designed to raise awareness of the growing demand for environmentally focused careers and the positive impact these roles have in addressing the climate crisis.

Throughout the week, students engaged in assemblies and reflective form-time activities exploring how their future qualification choices and personal skill sets could support pathways into green careers. These sessions encouraged students to think critically about how different industries are adapting and how they themselves can contribute to a more sustainable future.

A highlight of the week included welcoming Mo and Suzi from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), who delivered workshops to Year 9 and 10 Geography classes. Their sessions offered valuable insights into the work of the Civil Service, the role of DESNZ, and the department’s efforts to drive national progress towards net-zero emissions. Students gained a clearer understanding of how government-led environmental initiatives are shaping the UK's future.

To round off the week, Year 8 students visited the London Stadium, where they learned how project managers and sustainability teams are working to reduce the stadium’s carbon footprint. Students toured several behind-the-scenes areas of the venue and discovered the wide range of green-focused careers involved in running and maintaining a major sports and events facility.

One student, Nichita (8UL1), said:

“I found the trip to London Stadium really nice; it was a great experience. There were many jobs at the stadium and some interesting jobs.”

Green Careers Week provided students with a meaningful opportunity to explore how innovation, sustainability, and career aspirations intersect—empowering them to imagine the roles they might play in building a greener future.
