Urban Debate League – Round 2 – March 5th 2026
This term our debate team attended Round 2 of the Urban Debate League at Langdon Academy. As always, it was a fantastic opportunity for students to sharpen their speaking, critical thinking and teamwork skills while competing against other schools.
Prepared Motion: “This House Believes That Stan Culture Creates More Harm Than Good.”
Students explored the influence of stan culture on celebrities, fans and online communities.
Proposition arguments included:
- Stan culture can encourage toxic online behaviour, including harassment of critics and unhealthy levels of obsession with public figures.
- It can create unrealistic expectations for celebrities, putting them under intense pressure and contributing to negative impacts on mental health.
Opposition arguments included:
- Stan communities can create strong, positive fan networks that bring people together and allow young people to express shared interests.
- Fans often support artists through promotion and fundraising, helping creators succeed and build supportive communities.
Unprepared Motion: “This House Would Have the Government Fund Study Abroad Programmes.”
Students had limited preparation time and were challenged to think quickly and structure clear arguments.
Proposition arguments included:
- Government-funded programmes would make international study accessible to students from all backgrounds, not just those who can afford it.
- Studying abroad helps develop independence, cultural awareness and global skills that benefit both students and the wider economy.
Opposition arguments included:
- Funding such programmes could be expensive and divert resources from improving local education systems.
- Not all students benefit equally from study abroad, meaning government funding might not be the most effective use of public money.
We were also delighted to welcome several new Debate Mate students this term, who did incredibly well in their first competition. A big shout-out to Rehana, Manal, Hayden, Roman, Stephanie, Tausif and Hussain for their excellent contributions and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing their debating skills continue to grow in future rounds!
