Stratford School Academy Students Explore Fashion Careers at UAL London College of Fashion
Trips and Visits
Students from Stratford School Academy recently visited the London College of Fashion (University of the Arts London) for an immersive careers workshop exploring the intersection of fashion, music, and creative identity.
Inspired by the college's Resonant Matter exhibition, students were challenged to consider what "joyful resistance" means to them and to style a look for an imaginary band's album cover, a creative brief that brought together personal expression, critical thinking, and hands-on design. A selection of the album covers they produced can be seen below.
The visit was led by two fashion lecturers from the college, who guided students around the campus and exhibition and supported them in thinking about the wide range of careers available in the fashion industry, including styling, modelling, photography, and more. An undergraduate student also spoke to the group about her own journey into fashion, offering practical guidance on planning next steps after secondary school, including advice on building a portfolio, pursuing internships, and choosing subjects at post-16 level.
Students left the workshop with an expanded understanding of what a career in fashion can look like and a renewed confidence in their own creative voices.
One student reflected: "Instead of speaking with your mouth, fashion can help you speak with your clothes. You can express the way you feel with your outfit.
Fashion and music are my biggest interests, and I love to think about the way they intersect to create identities that so many people identify with and find community in."
Another added: "Fashion comes in multiple opportunities, like styling, modelling, and photography."
The visit forms part of Stratford School Academy's wider careers programme, which provides students with meaningful encounters with employers and further and higher education providers to support their planning for life beyond secondary school. Thank you to UAL for hosting such an insightful visit, we look forward to visiting again.
